There are so many different routes to choose from for the end to end challenge, either from lands end or from John O'Groats. In choosing my route I wanted as much as possible to see some beautiful sights, some parts of the country that I don't know very well and travel on safer roads.
Of course if you want you can try and go as fast as you can, but that means busy nasty roads. It means missing a great deal of the scenery.
My route is mainly built around David Piper's traffic free route. Of course its not completely traffic free, but he did try and base it on cycle paths and quite roads as much as possible. I've diverged majorly in one respect. He traveled from Preston to south of Birmingham via the canals. Instead I've opted to go further West and head south down the English/Welsh border from Chester. I'll miss out on a huge amount of industrial history, but I'll see some great castles instead.
